Metro cover wrap raises TtR profile
by Tom Hall ~ June 4th, 2009. Filed under: In The News, Terminate The Rate.To raise awareness of the TtR campaign we’ve run a cover wrap on this morning’s London Metro, bringing it to the attention of nearly 2 million more people.
In case you didn’t see it, here’s the text from the back page:
You might have heard that excuse somewhere else recently but the good news is that this is one ‘system failure’ we can all do something about.
It goes like this. Right now, you’re losing money without even knowing it. Mobile operators can charge around 5p per minute, to connect calls to anyone on a different mobile network, or from a landline to any mobile. It’s called the Mobile Termination Rate and we know that a fair price is around a penny or less.
Up to 80% of the price per minute of a call from a landline to a mobile goes straight to the mobile operator. The service doesn’t get any better and your call doesn’t become more interesting. It’s money for nothing, which is probably why most of the mobile networks don’t want to talk about it.
And although 5p a minute might not sound a lot, it soon adds up. Last year UK mobile operators charged over £750 million just for phoning a mobile from a landline. That’s over £60 million per month or over £2 million per day. And incredibly, it’s legal.
Fortunately, you can help change things. The regulator, Ofcom, is reviewing these charges, and there’s a good chance that if enough of us complain about them, they’ll be cut down.
Whatever mobile network or landline company you use, you can help us fight for cheaper calls to mobile phones by signing our online petition at terminatetherate.org.
It only takes a minute and we could all be better off.
If you haven’t already, check us out on Twitter (@terminaterate), Facebook and Flickr and sign the petition to get MTRs reduced.
