More political support for TtR

Mark Durkan, leader of the SDLP in Northern Ireland, has put his name to the ever-growing list of MPs supporting the Terminate the Rate campaign. In a post on the SDLP’s site, he explains what MTRs are, before giving the following statement:

“Indeed, I have now signed the campaign’s online petition at www.terminatetherate.org and would encourage others to do so. I have also signed Early Day Motions and supported this issue when it has been raised in parliament.

“Significantly lowering MTRs would pave the way for an end to per-minute call charges and high bills and would enable communication providers to offer flat-rate unlimited tariffs giving consumers better value for money.

“I am therefore calling on Ofcom to take action to reduce excessive mobile termination charges to better reflect actual costs. This would deliver a better deal for consumers – who, during the current recession, find themselves hard-pressed enough.”

Do you agree with Mr. Durkan? Have you signed the petition and emailed your MP?

I think the excessive termination rates are totally unreasonable, and should be reduced to the level appropriate to what they cost. The large operators should not be making excessive profits from these rates and Ofcom should act to effect reasonable charges as soon as possible
