by Tom Hall ~ June 1st, 2009. Filed under: In The News, Terminate The Rate.At The Guardian, Victor Keegan has taken a look at the current prices we’re all paying to use our phones, believing it is an area in which money can be saved. Beginning on ill-fitting mobile tariffs, he mentions the launch of billmonitor.com. This has arrived at an interesting time for a sector that is currently having its practices around roaming charges and termination rates disputed.
Roaming charges are being altered in light of a European Commission cap and as for termination rates; the amount a network has to pay for receiving calls from another network, Victor’s talking Terminate the Rate. Although he sees convincing other operators to ‘Terminate the Rate’ as being difficult, he sees it as a worth while fight, “Sweeping away such practices [inflated roaming and mobile termination charges] is vital to maximise the potential of the mobile revolution. It will also leave more in our pockets to spend on other things.”
