Drop the Rate Mate reaches 10,000 signatories
by Tom Hall ~ January 15th, 2010. Filed under: Campaign Supporters. As you may remember, high Mobile Termination Rates are currently under investigation in New Zealand. Telecoms company 2Degrees, started their own campaign ‘Drop the Rate Mate’ shortly after we launched Terminate the Rate in the UK.
This week ‘Drop the Rate Mate’ hit their first milestone of 10,000 signatories. This is a huge achievement for the campaign showing there is a lot of support abroad in countries with high MTRs. We continue to watch the Drop the Rate Mate campaign with interest.

We live in a poor mobile reception area so unless we stand outside we have to use a landline to call friends and families mobiles. So its not just about excess charges for landline users its rewarding mobile companies for their poor network coverage.
Of course we would all like things to be cheaper, however MTRs are relatively transparent, it is reasonably clear what you will be charged for calling a mobile number.
Before BT call on others to make changes (interesting how they were never in favour of capping the rates when they had their own mobile arm) perhaps they should put their own house in order and cease charging Bank Holiday calls at peak rates.
